I found the current source code repo at https://github.com/freenas/freenas

Is there a preferred way for submitting suggested patches? Fork it and submit a pull request? Something else? (If the answer is "ask the developers on IRC", could you point me to their IRC home?)

Or should feature-improvement patches be managed in their ticketing system? If so, should I submit a git bundle with the changes? Or is there another preferred way to send a patch broken into pieces for clarity and ease of review?

Either a git pull request or an attached patch at bugs.freenas.org is fine. There is a freenas-devel mailing list if you wish to discuss the patch before submitting it.
