I replaced ada3 about 2 weeks ago and on sep 8 i got these alerts:

Code:
FreeNAS @ amain.local

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.

Current alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.

--------------------------------

FreeNAS @ amain.local

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..

Current alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.
* Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..

After a scheduled SMART test I got this:

Code:
FreeNAS @ amain.local

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1.

Current alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.
* Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..
* Device: /dev/ada3, Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1.

Went to the store and got a new disk.
It's a Toshiba NAS N300 8Tb disk.
I bought another one while I was in the shop to be used as ada4.
Replaced ada3 and resilver went smooth.
When resilver was done I made another long SMART test (waited about 1 hour to let it complete) without any kind of alert.
Fine, problem solved.
Yesterday I replaced ada4 from WD red 4Tb to the new Toshiba N300.
This morning, i.e. now, resilver is 59% done on ada4 but I see these alerts:

Code:
FreeNAS @ amain.local

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.

Current alerts:
* Pool tank state is DEGRADED: One or more devices is currently being resilvered. The pool will continue to function, possibly in a degraded state..
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.

--------------------------------------

FreeNAS @ amain.local

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..

Current alerts:
* Pool tank state is DEGRADED: One or more devices is currently being resilvered. The pool will continue to function, possibly in a degraded state..
* Device: /dev/ada3, FAILED SMART self-check. BACK UP DATA NOW!.
* Device: /dev/ada3, Failed SMART usage Attribute: 7 Seek_Error_Rate..

The next SMART test is sheduled for tuesday nexy week. WHAT ???
The mobo is a Supermicro X11-SSH-F
Is this a motherboard failure ???

I didn't do this with the disk I returned, but the odds of 2 faulty disks in a row is quite small.

With that error from smart it's a question of doing an RMA on it. But yes the odds for this to happen are interesting.

Just one note - make sure to do proper burn-in of new drives. I recently got an IronWolf 8TB, which passed both "short" and "conveyance" tests without problems, but when it tried the "long" test it failed.

RMA on what, the disk or the motherboard ?

How do I do a burn-in of a disk ?
Is there a instruction for that procedure somewhere and does it require a extra computer running freenas ?
Well, it's time to use the serach function in this forum i guess.

Returning the disk seems reasonable. Good thing I shopped locally.
Just need to let the server finish the currently running resilver.
I'll check the guides for info about burn-in procedures, although I find them a bit on the paranoid side of the spectrum but it seem to be the rule in this forum ;-)
Thanks for the help.
