Well, you didn't give anyone here much information to go on (see "Forum Rules" on the masthead for guidance on what's useful), so I'm going to take a guess on the most likely cause - a corrupt system drive, maybe a USB boot drive. If you saved your configuration I would restore from it. If you didn't save it I would make a fresh boot drive, boot from it and reconfigure FreeNAS.

Since you still haven't given us anything to go on, it seems you might agree that you could have a corrupt USB boot drive.

For the sake of completeness, here are the next steps: get a new usb stick, 16GB minimum, and load version: 11.1 U7 on it. That version can be found at https://download.freenas.org/11/11.1-U7/
Boot up your FreeNAS box - if my guess was right (corrupt boot drive) and the new boot drive is properly created, you shoud be up and running again. If you can't find a saved config that you created from the System, General, Save Config button, take a look at post #35 in this thread https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/update-went-wrong.74084/page-2#post-514298 that describes how you can recover your configuration that is automatically stored on your pool on a daily basis (assuming that your system information is in its default location on your data pool and not on your boot drive).

Good luck!

Server seems fine, then I try to config plex and system goes unresponsive, everywhere I click shows sorry, an error occurred, I'm guessing that the server re-starts at some point because every time I log in I see a different IP.

I'll go ahead and re-load version 11.1, will that wipe all my data?

I appreciate your help and patience Redcoat, is not something I manage every day so its a little hard for me to speak admin lol

OK, so server is booting up OK, but the plex installation is a problem.

You say the server "seems fine" until you attempt to configure plex. How do you judge that it "seems fine" and what are you actually doing when you "configure plex"?

Do you have any other jails besides plex? Has plex ever run OK for you? Any other pertinent history?

An OS reload won't do anything to your data, but let's get some more information before we get there.

I dont have any other jails.

This how I'm setting up plex. (worked the first time I did it a few years ago)

1. Manually create a generic jail.
2. Create/link storage for that jail.
3. Go back to the main jails tab.
4. Select plex jail and then select shell command.
5. type "pkg upgrade" then press Y
6. type "pkg install plexmediaserver-plexpass" or "pkg install plexmediaserver"
7. Once done type "sysrc plexmediaserver_plexpass_enable=YES" or "sysrc plexmediaserver_enable=YES" depending on what version you installed.
8. Once done type "service -R"
9. in a browser, navigate to your plex jail's assigned IP:32400\web 10. Login into plex.

now I just did it again everything went fine until I installed the pkg for plex. I couldnt access plex via web so I shutdown/re-started plex jail and that's when everything went unresponsive and the server re-started. now its showing IP 192.168.1.159.

I just check jail still there but plex jail/pkg is not running, if I try to install it or enable plex the server will re-start. so I'm guessing something is corrupted.

installing the plug in for plex is a no go

Well, I really think it would be best for you to take this opportunity to update FreeNAS to the latest, make iocage jails and install plex afresh, but perhaps we should try to get you up and running easily with what you have, THEN figure out an upgrade path.

So, if you think the old config file you found is "reasonably fresh" (not too many significant changes in your installation since it was saved and there was a working plex installation in place at the time) then I suggest you reload it on the System General page and reboot and report back if your plex installation comes back to life.

unfortunately its a no go, I loaded my saved config everything loaded fine, as soon as I created a plex jail, server rebooted so I'm going to wipe and reload freenas, I'll update once I have some news. thanks again, truly appreciate the help.

If I re-store to factory default or wiping the OS it will not delete my data correct? OS is sitting separate hard drive from my data.

No. Safeguard is to disconnect your datadrives and leave only the OS drive connected.

If you are going that route, again, I encourage you to install the latest version of FreeNAS, make iocage jails, and install plex afresh.
Look at these tutorials to get an idea of how simple this will be - only "complication" will be finding the location of your existing media datastore on your pool and associating it with the appropriate mountpoint.
