my snapshots of my data sets aren't big at all is that intention? my data set is about 400 GB but the snapshot space being used is only 50 MB? is that right or is something with my snapshots wrong? any help would be a big help thank you in advanced

Is there anyway besides replication to export those snapshots to an external drive? Or is it just replication to another FreeNAS system to have them on backup drive?

Those snapshot lives under .zfs/snapshot on your dataset. Ex /tank/mydataset/.zfs/snapshot

Imagine rsync under cron could be option.

For dealing with thoose from smb side you can either make a symlink to the ,zfs/snapshot or you can specify Show hidden file in your share setting. And you must also I think make a new veto file string with removed .zfs.
