I'm attempting to install the Rancher OS/UI per the current FreeNAS 11.1-U2 documentation and I'm not getting very far.

I started off by creating a "vm-storage" dataset without any issues.

I've created the "RancherUI" VM with the "VM Type" set to "Docker VM" with 1 CPU, 2048MiB of memory and checked the "Autostart" box.

I go into the "Devices RancherUI" and select the "RAW" device and in the "Raw File" I browse to the "vm-storage" data set (/mnt/wth-freenas/vm-storage) and then add "/rancherui.img" to the end of it so my "Raw File" path looks like "/mnt/wth-freenas/vm-storage/rancherui.img". I click the "Disk boot" and enter a password in the "Password" box and enter "20G" in the "Disk size" box and press "OK".

Now here's the problem...

When I start the "RancherUI" VM, it asks if I want to "Start RancherUI" and I click on "Yes", it starts doing something and then almost instantly it comes up with "Error: Image download failed!".

Now, this box is my media server, it's connected to the network and can get out to the internet. When I go back into the "Devices RancherUI" and check the "NIC" device, the "VM" is set to "RancherUI" which is right, the type is "Network Interface" which is correct, the adapter type is "Intel e82545 (e1000)" which is correct and the "NIC to attach" is "igb0" which is correct and is connected and has a link.

Checking my router, my server is set to get its IP via DHCP and it has its IP and it's connecting and sending/receiving data so I'm not sure what the issue here is as my Plex server running in a jail is getting its IP and is running and connecting fine out to the net.

Doing some searching I saw that I should have a ".bhyve_containers" directory which should have files/image files. I have this directory but it's empty.

I've deleted the "RancherUI" VM and "vm-storage" dataset and re-created them several times rebooting the server in between and always the same error message when starting the "RancherUI" VM.

Any one have any ideas?

- As a workaroud download the rancheros image from the link below and put it in the .bhyve_containers/iso_files.
- Now start the VM it should run
- It should create a .img file with the name you gave in the RAW File Name in the Dataset dialog
- Then connect to the session (with the cu -l /dev/nm... command)

I'm running into a similar issue to ByerRA. Shortly after clicking 'Start', I receive the Image Download Failed error message. I don't have the .bhyve_containers folder appearing anywhere.

In a bid to get it to work, I created a new folder with 644 privileges. iso_files and img.gz file download from freenas link above with same privileges. I get a repeat of the above whenever I attempt to create the VM.

System info and ifconfig attached.

Thanks, that solved the problem and I'm up and running.

This worked for me, too!

FreeNas 11.1-U5

the .bhyve_containers folder was directly under the volume (/mnt/{volumeName}) and I had to create the iso_files folder. For good measure, I set RWX for everything. Also, I got a few checksum errors (possibly from trying other versions of the image file)

I'm on 11.1-U5 and I do not have a ".bhyve_containers" directory. Anywhere else I should look??
