Last week I looked at the GUI ( http://<IP>/ui/dashboard ) and saw the alert. Turned off the PC, looked at the drive to get a replacement, but put it back, and at boot told me that there is no boot disk, so ...., it's got to be the controller.
Today I've got a controller, booted the PC, all good. But I have the unwritten ( or god knows what got written since the controller was bad in the motherboard ) in the supposedly "bad disk". Looking at the dashboard log, I see the posted above.

My question is: should I do anything, or just let it be and it will recover itself in time ?. And if it does not recover in time, how much time should it let it self correct ? ( a 6x12TB box as RAID-Z2 ).

Thanks

so I'm lead to believe that the HDD is bad since

it writes ( something ), but can not read it back. Am I wrong ?

You know your hardware and we don't, which means I am lacking a bit of context.

Your controller was bad and you couldn't boot:
What kind of controller? What's the boot drive? Is da1 the boot drive?

To me, this looks like a failing drive. If it's in your raidz2, replace it, let it resilver. If this is your boot drive, and you don't have a mirror, take a config backup, reinstall FreeNAS on a healthy drive, and restore the config. If you are encrypting your pool, make sure to copy the encryption key before replacing boot.

its a i7-4770, 32 gig RAM ( non-ECC ). The boot drive is a 480 gig SSD and the pool is of 6 ea. 12 TB on a Gigabyte MB w/ 2 drive controller plus a 6 drive RAID capable controller, all build in.
The RAID capable controller broke/failed, so then installed a Dell H200 w/HBA firmware.
The problem is on one of the 12 TB drives. The boot drive is fine and updated the FreeNAS from 11.2-xx to the current (11.3-xx ).
Hardware been hardware, the drive may have broken the 13 year old controller on the motherboard, then again, the controller may have failed all on it's own. No clue.
I'm with no experience with FreeBSD or FreeNAS and away from hardware T/S for some years now.

I was hoping the logs showed a "classical" or obvious scenario. The log:

shows "more" failures but then "less", so is it likely to be a mismatch created during the week long the controller was failing, or is the drive physically bad/failing ?.

For me, only time will tell but in the meantime, I may be braking the "new" ( actually refurbished ) controller and loosing this pool of witch I have no backup ( mainly based on how much it cost to buy the hardware ) but trust that a Z2 is quite sturdy.

The safe road is replace the HDD, but money been tight, maybe the logs can tell that in this case "give it time and it will sync. again".
Now, if the log shows no such notion of mine, then, thats that.

What do you think are the possibilities/options ?

You can clear error counts from command line with zpool clear. If the errors come back after that, you have a failing drive.

zpool clear will only clear ZFS errors, not SMART ones. @argumentum, what's the output of smartctl -x /dev/da1?

Lots of problems here:
  • 6744 reallocated (bad) sectors
  • 992 pending sectors
  • 992 offline uncorrectable sectors
  • No long SMART tests in the log
  • The disk's running hot (though that's a more minor concern)
I'd say it's time to replace the disk, but should be well within its warranty period.
