Hi,

One of the Harddrives in my NAS is throwing an Device error.
It's a Seagate 8TB drive, one of 4 in RaidZ1, running FreeNAS-11.2-U7

However, when I take the disk out and test it with Seagate SeaTools and HDTune, it seems to come out fine:

Can anyone explain what this error indicates is actually wrong?
Predicted failure?

the way zfs tests and verifies data is often more accurate than even testing tools, because zfs doesnt trust any drive to return correct data in the first place, ever......
errors like this can also be caused by bad controllers/ports/cables, not just the drive itself
basically what this means is that your raidz1 is very much at risk. hopefully you have a backup, or the contents aren't very important to you....

The report says "Current pending sectors count" and "Offline uncorrectable". There are other SMART attibutes and signals related to cabling and whatnot, but these "Current pending" and "Offline uncorrectable" are both internal to the drive.

Can anyone explain what this error indicates is actually wrong?

Both of these refer to bad sectors which are not yet finally declared bad, but eventually invariably will be. This drive is to be replaced as soon as practical. It is not dead yet, but it is likely to degrade further, and can no longer be considered reliable.

Can you get us SMART attribute data for the offending drive?

It failed a long smart test, the drive is toast and you should replace it asap.

Unfortunately sifting through the chafe is something that is required of this forum these days.....

Yeah. I've experienced this with a brand-new (DOM September 2019) drive. I was like "WTF I thought I burned-in fine" (Only two passes though), yet here we are.
Hoping Seagate will cross-ship a replacement; That one's in a RaidZ2 so I'm not overly concerned with (checks) 40 (holy crap) uncorrectable sectors so far, but it annoying...

It is currently resilvering back into the Pool, as I don't have another drive to replace it with just yet.
It's just outside of manufacturers-warranty, but still under consumer-warranty (Norwegian law says electronics have a minimum of 5 years life expectancy)

I had another drive in this pool fail 4 months ago, and got it replaced by manufacturers-warranty, but that one did show errors in both SeaTools and HDTune, so I dont know if they will replace this drive for me just yet if its not detecting in Seagates own tool..

How curious, the drive that's acting up on my is also a ST8000DM004-2CX188. Curious indeed....

Scenarios like this is why I standardized my pool and my backup disks around one drive type, for which I keep a burned in but cold spare on site.

It also speaks in favor of buying a motley collection of used stuff based on a known good platform (ie HGST in the past) since the failures should be more random than with drives from the same batch.

Despite some very oligopolistic pricing behavior on the part of OEMs, service has only gotten worse. Too bad the sale of HGST was allowed.

That's strange.

SMART attributes say the drive is clean, with raw values of zero for "Current pending sectors", "Offline uncorrectable" and generally everything looks just great about the drive. However the screenshot from the first post clearly mentions these being non-zero. And the error log, referencing

Code:
Error 2 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 17896 hours (745 days + 16 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle .

After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
  -- -- -- -- -- -- --
  40 51 00 ff ff ff 0f Error: UNC at LBA = 0x0fffffff = 268435455

repeats twice with the same LBA and the address looks strange, being 128 GB minus one sector (if I'm not mistaken with my calculation)?

Since serial numbers are understandably blanked out of the log, can you check with Seagate website if there is a firmware update available for this drive? I would much like to take a look at their change log if they have any, but I don't recommend you apply any firmware updates, if available, at the moment.

Yeah, I checked mine and there was nothing (which makes sense, it's only three months old). Firmware last released... uh... Hmm, they don't show prior versions of firmware.

"No newer firmware available" on the link @Tsaukpaetra referenced.

I dont know if the S.M.A.R.T log might be different now since the drive was wiped during my testing in windows, and FreeNas havent detected it yet?
I have scheduled a long S.M.A.R.T for tomorrow, so possibly it will find something again.

In any case,
1. SMART is (or should be) persistent, not something which goes away when disk is wiped
2. there was a reference to dev/ada2 in both warning message quoting pending sectors, and your smartctl output, so it is supposedly is the same drive

there must be some simple explanation, but I can only suggest the drive jumped /dev/adaX positions, and test is from the different drive from the one which produced the original message. The error from the log is also mighty suspicious, regardless of other shenanigans.

acutally, the other possibility is that overwrite corrected the presumably defective sectors, although I have never seen that happen without leaving some or other trace in SMART attributes.

Yeah, in theory those pending sectors should be converted into reallocated sectors, but that didn't happen to me (and it looks like it didn't happen here either). Really strange...

More Seagate SMR drives. I'm starting to notice a pattern here with them kicking back offline uncorrectable sectors; or it could just be that they're lousy gear.

Regarding the counters resetting, I know there's been some situations where a "bad sector" that was given an erase command was simply marked as "permanently dead" by the drive, rolled over into a failed/reallocated sector. It really ought to have something in there.

The #2 Extended Offline now completed without error ?

The web-store said they have had alot of issues with these drives, but will still need to test it.
If I send it in, it's possible they wont find an issue, return it to me and I have to pay a fee..

Suggestions?

Well I'm biting the bullet and initiated an RMA. Will report back, my drive mysteriously went from 56 unforgettable sectors to 48 since the last day and I'm done fooling around.

Well I'm biting the bullet and initiated an RMA.

Any chance you can get a SMART log before you send it off? I'm interested if it has something like this
Code:
Error 1 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 15304 hours (637 days + 16 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle .

After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
  -- -- -- -- -- -- --
  40 51 00 ff ff ff 0f Error: UNC at LBA = 0x0fffffff = 268435455

Specifically the (2^n-1) LBA involved.

Sure thing! I don't expect to send it off for another week if Seagate is to be believed.

I am gonna keep using it untill I get another error on it, I got email notifications set to send any errors so I'll know immediately.

I still got almost 3 years of consumer-warranty on it, and the data is not critical.
