Offline share when online vs. offline

I regularly work away from my NAS (coffee shops, etc). Although I am familiar with the benefits of NextCloud and the like, my preference would be to avoid extra components, where feasible. As such, I plan to mark certain shares as available offline, so I can just use the local copy on my laptop when away from my LAN.

I am curious to know how this works under the covers.
  • On what kind of schedule does the write back to the NAS server occur when back on my LAN? Is this "immediate" i.e. as soon as the share server is connected again? Or is there some sort of schedule/frequency? I am assuming the former, but want to check.
  • If I am on my LAN with full connectivity to the share and edit a file, is the local hard drive on my laptop effectively used as a cache i.e. the NAS server is used similar to the previous bullet? Or am I editing (reading) directly from the NAS server in that situation?

Thank you.
