NFS On Esxi 6.7 Causes VM To Stop Responding

So I've followed the excellent forum posts here about setting up and configuring FreeNas. I'm running it on a VM on Esxi host (Yes, I passed through the HBA controllers, and followed all the safety precautions). That part works wonderfully.

When I created an NFS share on my FreeNas 11.2 box, I mounted that share on my Esxi host, successfully, then went to use it for VM storage, and after a short time of read/writes to the vm it would lock up, and the nfs mount would become non-responsive. Looking into the Esxi logs I found hundreds of entries
  • NFS Error: Unable to connect to NFS server
  • WARNING: NFS: 983: Connect failed for client 0xb613340 sock 184683088: I/O error
  • WARNING: NFS: 898: RPC error 12 (RPC failed) trying to get port for Mount Program (100005) Version (3) Protocol (TCP) on Server (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
  • NFSLock: 515: Stop accessing fd 0xc21eba0 4
NFS: 283: Lost connection to the server 192.168.100.1 mount point /vol/datastore01, mounted as bf7ce3db-42c081a2-0000-000000000000 ("datastore01")
NFSLock: 477: Start accessing fd 0xc21eba0 again
NFS: 292: Restored connection to the server 192.168.100.1 mount point /vol/datastore01, mounted as bf7ce3db-42c081a2-0000-000000000000 ("datastore01")

So I googled that and found some articles about changing the NFS.MaxQueueDepth to 64, which I did, with no effect. Same issue.

I searched and searched but couldn't find a resolution to this. So I create an iscsi store instead and it works perfectly. Eliminating any software/network issue as being the problem.

I realize this isn't a support site to Esxi, but I'm not convinced that's the issue.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Anyone send me in the right direction here?

Thanks in advance for your support.
