Fry's no longer carries SAS cables (who knew?) so I have to wait until Monday to get the mini-SAS SFF-8087 cables. I entertained myself by finding a lifetime's worth of old drives and loading them into the caddies.

Don't get all excited -- we've hit the dregs of my stash. After about drive 24, we're hitting some ancient stuff. Drives 47 & 48 are Seagate Barracuda 300GB circa 2005. I wonder if they'll even spin up...

Not that I expected anything else, but moving to the new chassis was simple. the wiring harnesses were very well organized, and aside from having to pull the backplanes out to install the SFF-8087 connectors, it was easy. It is a bit more quiet than the SUPERMICRO SuperChassis CSE-836E1-R800B Black 3U Rackmount Server Case 800W Redundant and is "only" using 900W.

I am reminded how ratty some of these drives are. The 300GB drives were unusable.

and is "only" using 900W.
That must be all those drives because mine, with 16 drives, is 'only' pulling 215 watts, while transcoding a video for Plex.

Wife is in the hospital so been busy but had some time home today so I swapped over as well. Didn't have any paperwork with the case but was able to figure out which standoffs were needed. Had already connected the SAS cables to the backplanes so just had to drop the board in and hook it up. Plugged in one PSU and after a few seconds everything powered up. Gave a warning tone until all the PSU's were plugged in and then no issue. Board booted up without a hitch. Still have to get different CPU coolers but not a deal breaker for now just can't close the MoBo section of the case.

I did however learn that if you do not have a drive in the carrier and need to access the backplane you don't have to completely pull it out. Pull up about an inch and they will clear everything, then pull out the back row so you can access the connectors. Makes it a lot easier than pulling 48 plastic carrier's out to put them back in again.

Now I just need to build a rack to mount it all in and either swap my 4U with my step daughter's 1U case when I end up in Phoenix again or swap my router into it. Oh well, not a huge deal right now.

I bought a startech 42u open 4-post rack from newegg for something like $200.00 and have been happy with it. No doors, but it holds equipment and has some cable management brackets. Came in a tiny box, but it extremely sturdy and has casters.

I have the 12U version as well. It's great.

I have some other stuff to build so putting together a wood cabinet is just as easy plus I can place a filter to keep it all clean. Already had two rail's floating around and bought another. Probably go pick up some materials today to build the framework and then get measurements to enclose it all. Only thing I wish I had is a table saw with that I probably would just buy all the materials today but I want to try and have some of the cuts super straight. Already got the casters as well and they are rated up to 250 lbs each so I don't have to worry about overloading it ever. Will end up being 36U tall inside and so far the cases seem to be pretty heavy for what I have and if I ever move I intend to just leave it all in the rack and roll it out the door.

Plus if I have to assemble it anyway I may as well get by cheaper. I could build out what you are looking at for about 75 bucks. The complete outside adds another 50 using 3/4 inch material.

I got the HDDs unwrapped for the new iSCSI pool. Now I have to put this together and do some testing.

Nice, got some stuff to start building the cabinet for mine to sit in but I had to make something else first.

Doesn't look like much but I can say that it makes it much easier for a disabled person to use the bathroom. Just takes time to put together and mount the dang thing.

@Chris Moore It will be a while before I get to see that many new drives again. Hopefully they all pass tests with flying colors though. I am still a bit turned off on seagate drives myself.

The price is good, and I keep a close eye on them because I don't really trust them. I also have a couple spares in each size sitting on the shelf.

I used a manual screwdriver too... It isn't so bad, there are only two screws for each drive with a couple more plastic posts to ensure proper alignment.

I've had a bunch (okay, 12) of seagate archive 8tb drives running for 2+ years without a single failure in one of my NAS. The 5tb are awful, they seem to fail annually.

Was just offering an easy solution.

The last one I built was from 2x4 and 3/4" decking for the sides and top. Was waaaaaaay too heavy, hence the open frame. You could build what I have out of 2x4... but adding 18" to the depth in less than 5 minutes is worth the $$

I hate to hear that. I have 4 of the 5TB drives in my NAS for my backup pool.

The weight will not matter for me. I bought casters that support 250lbs each. My aquarium that was posted earlier in the thread was on casters as well. Worked at a place at one point that had great big skates with 15 or 20 casters on each one and we could roll houses along the factory floor with them as they went from one stage to the next.

Actually worked on it a bit today and built the frame, put the bottom on and attached the casters and rails. Have a couple pieces of white melamine coated mdf left over from the other project that I will use for the sides and can pick up another sheet for the top and doors later. Just sucks not having a shop and table saw to do it all but I have built a ton of stuff off the back of my pickup already.

You can pick up a small portable table saw at harbor freight for well under $100.00 with a 20% off coupon! Sometimes, if not for the tailgate, I'd have no work-space at all! LOL

Post up some pics when you're done!

If you have an IKEA close to you, another alternative is the 'Lack' table which is the same width as a 19" rack. I've seen people stack them up to make a virtual Scandinavian data-center in their homes!

I've been buying them at bestbuy and newegg and shucking them from USB enclosures, they're extremely cheap at $169.00 for 8tb and $119 for 5tb. It doesn't matter which version you buy, all 3.5" have the same drives but some come with a usb hub or a shiny case...

Also, if you're careful, you can disassemble them with no evidence and return them under the 2 year warranty. There were zero questions asked, just issued an RMA. One of them was actually just hooked up to my LG (Ubuntu Remix) NAS as a backup drive via usb and died silently. Process and results were the same for all of them. Turnaround was about a month, but of course, I'd already bought replacements and now have spares.

So, regardless, they're an excellent deal. It's basically how my pool grew from 6 to 15 drives in a year.

I will get a table saw at some point but got spoiled using a nice 12 inch delta where I was at a few years ago and where I worked at one point. Plus working a sheet of 3/4 material on a little saw does not tend to do very well unless you have a decent stand/table set up and without a shop building all of that out just does not make sense at this point.

I just used my little ryobi 5.5inch cordless saw with a nice blade on it and a 2x4 with a couple clamps as a ledger. Will post up some pics when i get them taken. Will probably take a couple before it is done so you can see the frame and all. Could cut the sides and attach them right now but my shoulder is giving fits and I had to swap my mother in laws cell phone out for her since her nexus would not stay charged.

I saw today that Newegg has some of the 8TB external's on sale and were selling bare 4TB's for pretty cheap as well. Didn't pay it much attention though but always sales when I can't afford it anyway.
