Hello Community,

I've been researching for the past weeks on hardware and recommended parts for my Freenas build.

I'm planning on installing ESXi then run Freenas on a VM with a PFsense VM.

My build is as follows:

Case:

Fractal Design Node 804

Cpu:

Intel Xeon E3-1230 v6 Kaby Lake

Mobo:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSM-F-O

Memory:

1x 16GB Samsung ECC DDR4 2133MHz

Hard drives:

5x Seagate 3TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 64MB 7200 RPM Raidz2

PSU:

SeaSonic 650W Power Supply X650 SS-650KM3

Boot:

1x 16GB Flash Drive

Any suggestions I should make or is this a good starting ground?

A firewall really isn't something that should be virtualized. The big exception to that is if you're a big business and have a complex setup that allows you to seamlessly failover to standby hardware while keeping the software going. And it's still going to be a mostly dedicated server doing firewall duties (maybe some extra endpoint stuff).

Thanks for the input Ericloewe. I'll plan down the road to have something dedicate, for now, I don't have any firewall.
