Can I create multiple VLANs that use the same physical ethernet port (em0)

Assuming I am using the term 'VLAN' correctly my plan is to have two VLANs. VLAN1 will be for my home network and will connect all my computers to the FreeNAS server and VLAN2 will connect to a VPN...Hopefully I havent completely confused what a VLAN actually does and what I wrote about makes sense.

Right now I have an old computer I am using as a FreeNas server to experiment with it. I will soon be building something better and was wondering if for the functionality I wrote about above, would I be better off getting a motherboard with two 10Gbe ethernet ports or a motherboard with four 1Gbe ethernet ports. Assuming price for both motherboards is identical and all other feature are identical.

Yes. You can create multiple vlans on an interface. Kind of the point of vlans.

However, if your switch doesn't support it, it won't do anything for you.

Lol oh yea. I guess I didnt really think hard enough about it. Using different physical ports would just be a LAN.

Thanks for the quick reply
