Actually reading the Wikipedia entry for SAS, (Serial Attached SCSI), the first paragraph has the
below entry. Thus, I guess SATA I @ 1.5Gbps speed is not officially supported by SAS.

SAS offers backward compatibility with SATA, versions 2 and later.

Huh, maybe that's why LSI decided to seemingly drop it in newer firmwares...

Hmm. Originally I thought SATA I @ 1.5Gbps was only dropped from SAS III, (3, 6, 12Gbps), controllers.
But, if the standard states SAS does not need to support SATA I @ 1.5Gbps, then I can see that today, even
SAS II, (3, 6Gbps), might drop the old, rarely used today SATA I @ 1.5Gbps.
