Lost link with Freenas

Hoping someone can help...

About 3 yrs ago had a freenas set up to store a lot of work files & media by an IT specialist who's no longer around. It was originally set up with the naming credentials FreeNAS_CANDU.

Recently for some reason its stopped allowing me to see the Folders in the Freenas Drive on my desktop (Windows 7 OS) and the only networked folder I can see when I open the Freenas Folder on the network (it's still visible) is "homes" which will not open.

I've searched through a lot of the forums which all provide great answers and information on creating and sharing a new volume etc but I can't find any specific answers to re-establishing a link with the Freenas folders which were there previously? Ideally I just want to reconnect to this drive and be able to open/see the folders/files stored there previously- I don't want to lose them!

When checking the Freenas Interface the "Candu" dataset is still visible but when I try to change permissions to access the folder it comes up with the following information...

Environment:

Software Version: FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2-x64 (r12686+b770da6_dirty)
Request Method: GET
Request URL: http://192.168.1.40/storage/mountpoint/permission/mnt/FreeNAS_CANDU/

Traceback:
File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/django/core/handlers/base.py" in get_response
105. response = middleware_method(request, callback, callback_args, callback_kwargs)
File "/usr/local/www/freenasUI/../freenasUI/freeadmin/middleware.py" in process_view

File "/usr/local/www/freenasUI/../freenasUI/storage/forms.py" in __init__

File "/usr/local/www/freenasUI/../freenasUI/middleware/notifier.py" in mp_get_owner
2230. raise OSError('Invalid mountpoint %s' % (path, ))

Exception Type: OSError at /storage/mountpoint/permission/mnt/FreeNAS_CANDU/
Exception Value: Invalid mountpoint /mnt/FreeNAS_CANDU

Forgive me as my expertise in this is incredibly limited and I can just about grasp the basics, but I just wanted to see on here if anyone can confirm if I've been missing something "obvious" to resolve this or if I'm better off leaving it to an IT professional to resolve?

Hope someone can help?

Wow, that's an ancient version.

Were you able to resolve the issue?

At first glance, it's hard to tell if you're doing something wrong or if it's just an old bug that's been fixed long ago.

What kind of hardware are we talking about? Updating to something newer would be helpful, if possible. 8.x was ancient three years ago, much less now. Some people have naturally been around that long, but I'm sure the quirks of the older versions are a bit of a blur in their minds by now. Note that I'm not saying "jump into an upgrade", but that's something that needs to be looked into.

As for your immediate problem, what troubleshooting steps did you take, exactly? Are you using ZFS? Are all the disks healthy?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm afraid my technical expertise isn't that great on the hardware spec front but I do know my Freenas is housed in a separate desktop box. It has 2x 2TB hard drives in it and the NAS software is installed on a flash drive which is installed inside the desktop box.

I'm still able to access/login to the FreeNAS software on the system. It appears it is using ZFS and as far as I know the disks are healthy but wouldn't know how to check that? As for trouble-shooting I haven't done anything beyond try to re-establish the links using the prompts on the software which resulted in the error code in my original post.

I appreciate that the OS is old and would be happy with upgrading it. I was even considering 'unmounting' or 'disconnecting' the disks and then setting the whole thing up again, but I really wanted to access and backup the files that are currently on the disks before I did that. That's the only reason why I'm reluctant to start from scratch again.

Are you accessing the system by way of the web interface?

@Thasreetthanos, having run companies in Heckmondwike and Dewsbury, I "get" your user name...

I'm going to try a long-shot suggestion here to get you going. "Recently" Microsoft changed some long-time access permission protocol availability to Windows shares to address security concerns and hardened them during the updating process. I don't know how up to date your Win7 version is but I want to suggest something you might investigate to get back access to your shares. This is a "quick-and-dirty" just as a test - if it "works" we can debate here the pro's and con's of using it as your fix, or not, long and short-term, etc. In a "pure" home network or similar it shoudn't be an issue.

I don't have a Win7 machine any more, nor a copy to quickly spin up, so this is working from a combo of memory (likely poor) and Google-fu: On your Win7 machine you are using to access your FreeNAS box, Open Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows features on or off. In the list of options, look for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support. If the checkbox associated with it is unchecked, check it and press OK.

See if the "missing" shares on your FreeNAS box now appear in Windows Explorer and are accessible and report the result here, please. Drink a pint of Tetley's bitter on my behalf if the result is +ve...
