i would like buy server to be FreeNAS server

i thinking about
HP PROLAINT ML10 G9 - - Intel Xeon E3-1225 v5 16GB
with 6 X HP 4TB 6G SATA 5.9K 3.5in NHP ETY HDD

and i read in the fourm that SSD Drive is necessary for (ZIL/L2ARC)
so i will add
Samsung 750 EVO - 250GB - 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD

my use on FreeNAS its only for backup my company data (100-150 workstation will do backup everyday to the nas - with UrBackup)

that is good spec for FreeNAS or i need change hardware?

sorry i am newbie

I think you wont benefit from zil/l2arc. Consider to add ram than buying a ssd.
For Backups 16gb ram may be enough.
Gbit Ethernet?

@snaptec is correct that you won't need an SSD for L2ARC or a SLOG device; adding memory would be the better option. Also, AFAICT that motherboard only has 6 SATA ports and all of them will be used by the 6 hard drives, so you wouldn't have a port for the SSD.

The Proliant ML10 G8 power supply (PSU) is only rated for 300W, which isn't adequate for 6 hard drives. Perhaps you can upgrade to a larger-capacity PSU? In any case, you won't have success with a 300W PSU; see the "Proper Power Supply Sizing Guidance" thread for details.

Good luck!

Again, you won't gain any benefit from having an L2ARC or ZIL SLOG device. Installing one will be a waste of resources.

If you want to use the SSD as your boot device, then you would have to use 5 hard drives instead of 6, as you mentioned.

Yes. You need a bigger PSU. 500W should be adequate, but consult the guide and make your own evaluation.

If you're really planning on backing up 100-150 workstations, then, yes. You need more RAM. 32GB would be good. 64GB would be better. FreeNAS loves RAM.

100-150 workstations?

Do yourself a favor and get a beefier system, like a Xeon E5.

You don't need an L2ARC. You don't need a ZIL SLOG. You don't need either of them, at all. So you don't need an SSD.

If you RAIDZ2 your drives, you'll have 16 TB of space. Is that enough to store daily backups for 100-150 computers?

Cheers,
Matt

why ? Xeon E3 CPU is not good?
It's good, just not appropriate for a large server. 100+ workstation backups is not a light load.

@MatthewSteinhoff and @Ericloewe have raised some good points. Another has to do with networking; 100+ workstations running backups are likely to overwhelm a gigabit LAN connection.
