Kali linux vm won't boot after install

I did a fresh install of Kali Linux to a freenas vm but it won't boot. It just comes up to a black screen with a flashing cursor. I've tried reinstalling several times, booting into rescue mode and modifying the root and prefix, and booting from config file using the boot manager. Nothing works.

I was able to successfully install Kali linux on vmware, but I don't think vmware forced uefi. I'm certain it is something with the uefi configuration, but I can't figure out what.

Any assistance would be appreciated because I'm baffled.

Have you tried setting all your VM devices to VirtIO?

Will that require a reload if I do? Also, do I need to do it on all my VM's? I was able to load a couple Windows VM's with no boot issues.

No, you don't need to reboot the FreeNAS server. You will need to shutdown the Kali VM to make the device change. Also, make sure you configured the bootloader to UEFI, not UEFI-CSM.

Switching to VirtIO didn't fix it.

After experimenting with Kali, I think this is because the Kali installer installs the legacy BIOS version of grub, instead of the UEFI version of grub.
