I noticed today a mention to probably not run jails inside a virtualised FreeNAS.

What are the problems that I'd be likely to encounter? currently only have have @danb35 's Heimball jail but i'm planning to move plex/transmition/nextcloud/etc into the vm'd FreeNAS

Specs:
IBM x3650 m3
dual xeon x5650
92 GB ram
mix of sas and sata drives on an ibm m1015 in it mode passed through to Freenas

ESXi 6.7 on USB thumbdrive
FreeNAS on USB thumbdrive but planning to to migrate to ssd on onboard sata port

I never had a problem with jails with Freenas VM on ESXI host. I should mention I have always passed a hardware Nic directly through to the Freenas VM with PCI passthrough.

I note that for some reason, my HBA passthrough causes the VT-D extensions to be unavailable to the FreeNAS VM and I can't run VMs, but I am able to run jails just fine, with the promiscuous mode point from @blanchet being an important stepping stone.
