How to fix "The operation on file "" failed (write)" error reported by VMware Workstation 9.
This issue occurred for me after wiping the system partition on my server PC to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 (from the RC).
Loading the FreeNAS VM from the 2nd partition on the main HDD (which is how I'd run it for the past 6 months) resulted in this error after it tried to load the HDD pool during VM boot.
After hours of no help from Google, I went to Server Manager -> File and Storage Services -> Disks
The tab with heading "Read Only" showed that all my physical drives which were set to passthrough in VMware had a tick in this "Read Only" column. These HDDs are set to "Offline" to allow the passthrough, so I set them to "Online" and then back to "Offline" which then removed the "Read Only" tick.
After doing this to all FreeNAS dedicated HDDs, I reopened the VM and after a full boot, now had access to my data again.
