Hi,
I've got a VM up and running to try out TrueNAS core and the used hardware I've been ordering is finally coming in to build the actual NAS.
I picked up a Xeon E3 HP Z230 as a donor platform for board, processor, 16GB of ECC and power supply.
I've accumulated 8x4TB 7200 RPM white label enterprise drives.
I picked up some ancient 64GB Samsung 2.5" SLC SSDs for a boot pair. I was going to use SATADOMs but these ended up being cheaper (~$10/drive) and won't require making power cables.
I also picked up an LSI 9207 HBA to attach the storage drives to.
I was originally going to try to modify the HP case to hold the drives, but it looked like more trouble than it would be worth so I ordered a Fractal Node 804.
I'm debating between 2x4 drive Z1 vdevs and a single 8 drive z2 vdev. Performance of either should be acceptable as I'm sticking with 1Gb networking for the time being. Main usage goals are as a backup target and hosting a large audio library.
