Hello,

I'm planning to build a server for various home services (including FreeNAS) and would like some help with the hardware. I've built my share of office and gaming PCs, but somewhat in the dark when it comes to server builds. Do I need any special hardware for storage devices? Are there any must-have mobo features? Am I better off going with a traditional server setup?

I will be running:
  • ESXi
    • FreeNAS for home storage
    • Alpine w/ containers for PleX/Sonarr/Radarr/Jackett
    • Ubuntu for office productivity
    • Windows Server w/ 1-2 clients for learning enviroment

I've been hearing great things about Ryzen builds, but traditional server motherboards seem to be limited. I guess ECC support is most important, which most mobos seem to have.

I'm flexible on form factor (rack mount vs tower) and while budget isn't unlimited, I would pay more for hardware that saves me on electricity in the long run.

Thanks for any input!
