Hello together,

my name is stahl im 27 years old and i am on my last year of my apprenticeship as IT specialist (system integration). On our last year we have to choose a project and work on it, with documentation etc. The last step is a presentation, where i have to explain my project and the 3 specialist will judge after that about my grade. I choose FreeNAS as my project, i will configure FreenNAS with Shares and integrate it to Active Directory. After that i will install OPNSense on the virtual machine from freeNAS and will do a standard configuration as well. I hope that will work as i expecting.

Thanks for your time and i hope we will later see us on the forum.

Sounds like an interesting project. There is an enormous breadth and depth of knowledge and experience within the FreeNAS fraternity and forum members are a friendly lot, so if you get stuck, someone should be able to help you out. To familiarise yourself with forum etiquette, have a look through the Forum Guidelines.

Good choice of project! I learned a ton about storage and its ways from implementing FreeNAS and trolling the forums. That’s been useful in ways not expected: For example, I can now “talk storage” a little better when shilling Cisco HX (their HCI solution), and that’s genuinely useful, as it gets me paid.

FreeNAS touched a surprising amount of knowledge domains. Windows Vista and up network browsing shenanigans (WSD, who knew, eh?), storage and its performance in general and in some specifics, including why RAID5 is dead, even a little bit of networking re real-world performance and what it takes to saturate a 10Gb link from storage.

Good times if you’re a nerd :).
