I have been running FreeNAS on my Frankenstein NAS server for about a year and a half now. I have a pretty decient network setup in my home with a domain controller with Active directory, DHCP/DNS server. Mail Server. Multiple workstations. It wasn't until my Plex server had a scare that I decided I needed some kind of NAS backup solution in case it ever does crash. I had a bunch of old PCs laying around so I grabbed one and repurposed it. Its a Gigabyte board, z370 chipset with a i5-9400. 32 GBs of ram and I took a old mid tower ATX case and modifyed it to hold as many drives as I could. With the SATA PCI-e card I installed it has 8x4TB drives with the datapool set up in 4 2x4TB Mirrored raids so it has about 16TB of storage. My plex backup uses about 9TB of that with compression. So I also setup nextcloud on there for personal cloud storage and then use syncthing to keep the plex server backed up in real time.
