Long time system admin and looking to build my first home NAS using this list as a guide. Currently reading up on HDD's to get an idea on what would be the best drive to use and the best raid pool setup to use for my purposes.

Planning on this build being a fileserver as well as a plex server. If you have some good links to short cut my learning on the raid setups in FreeNAS (I've been reading the guide and trying to wrap my head around how it's done in FreeNAS) or links to good information on how to plan the amount of HDD's needed it'd be appreciated. If not nice to meet you and I'll be asking more questions as I beef up my knowledge.

Thanks! Been reading the PDF created by Cyberjock.

One question I've not figured out is in there where it's stated

Eventually even RAIDZ2 will no longer be safe(estimated at around 2019).

So should I be aiming for RAIDZ3 from the start or is RAIDZ2 still fully valid and an acceptable way to go?

I think it depends on how large the capacity is on the drives that you are using.
I have a server at work using 10 TB Seagate Exos drives and I'm perfectly comfortable with RAIDz2.
