I am trying to get FTP working so I can transfer files in and out when I am away. Before I try logging in from outside I wanted to test FTP from home.

As as test I tried to configure and start the FTP service. I created a directory "ftp" and pointed FTP to it, and checked "anonymous login" as well as "local user" login. I opened a web browser and entered:
ftp://192.168.0.193 which is the local IP of my FreeNAS box. I got an authentication window. I entered [blank], my freenas login without success.

Guidance please.

you need to make sure your your filesystem permissions and your FTP permissions are set properly.

under the FTP settings, make sure 'Other' has at least read permissions under the files section and read and execute for folders. Make sure 'Other' has at least read and execute permissions to the folder you are sharing with ftp as well as at least execute permissions on all higher level directories.
