FreeNAS 11.3 upgrade removed a dataset

David, with all due respect, I've asked you four times to check this in post #11, #13, #15 and again in post #19. Your latest post invalidates my comments in post #17. There's been a lot of time wasted in between. You need to follow the instructions to the letter and not be distracted along the way. You have a permissions issue. Return to post #9.

Hello Basil. I understand your frustration. I have also done what you have asked and told you that I have manually at the TOP level of all of the pools have gone in and stated "OPEN" for all datasets, recursively and including all child datasets. They are 100% open. This is the issue. Windows shows it as a "special" permission as FreeNAS is in charge of the permissions, not Windows, but within FreeNAS, EVERYTHING is now 100% open to all users all groups. Still....blank within Windows File Explorer. I have never seen this before. All other ones are fine and like I showed you, the data is still there. Just not visible AT ALL within Windows, even with "hidden files" set as "show." This is my predicament. This is why I have posted. This HAS to be a bug. Why I am wondering if I should just go back to 11.2 to see if I can RE-access the files in there. My issue with that, is I don't want to compound the current issue by doing that and actually risk losing the data that I know is fine on FreeNAS, just not accessible.

It's not a bug, there's nothing wrong with permissions in 11.3. Feel free to use a previous boot environment to see what it shows you if you're convinced there's a bug, I see no evidence of one.

If you can see the files at the CLI in the FreeNAS shell, they are there. Permissions changes may show them to you again (or not if they aren't done correctly), but nothing about permissions changes will remove the files, ever.

Can you please show the output from ls -l /mnt/HenriskconStorage/Media/TVShows

and

getfacl /mnt/HenriskconStorage/Media/TVShows

Thank you all for your help. I know its frustrating helping people that are new to this...so hopefully, I can learn from you and pass this on to the newbies like me later on.

OK, sorry for the poor spelling... I see you corrected it.

The permissions are as you say all for root:wheel (unix) permissions.

In Windows, under a powershell window, what do you get from whoami (or have you specified the user in the drive mapping for s: )?

On the FreeNAS server, what does zfs list show?

Also, in the jail what do you get from running sysrc -a (iocage exec plex sysrc -a ... substitute plex for the name of your plex jail to run it from the host)

On Windows, I map the drive as a "another user' and use the Root user with the primary password. This should give the system full and unlimited access this way and bypass user setup and permissions and whatnot, right?

on the zfs list, I'll paste below

I created a video that walks through what I consider "best practice" for creating Windows shares in FreeNAS, how to configure simple ACLs, how to set up users, and the description has some notes on troubleshooting and samba logs. Maybe it's useful, you may be able to compare your setup and see relevant differences. https://youtu.be/9Xsgsap0wgQ

@sretalla did you get my reports from above? I got Yoricks' best practice video, but that doesn't help my situation with what I have going on currently in that dataset. I will watch that later when I want to create a NEW dataset.

Yes, I see.

All the permissions are looking right/OK.

I'm guessing that you're set up on the share to use ACLs although none are defined...

Maybe as a test we should add an ACL entry on the share with "everyone" giving full permissions, just to prove that it's a permissions problem.

THANK YOU! Yes, I knew this would be a major pain. I'm new....but I knew my permissions had to be somewhat correct on this. This is such a weird issue to have. How would you like me to do it? In FreeNAS? Windows has zero permissions itself to change anything in that dataset, so I would assume you want me to add something in FreeNAS

Under Sharing | Windows Shares (SMB)... to the right of your share, the 3 vertical dots, then Edit ACL.

Then Add ACL Item (button in the middle on the left).

Then on the right, edit the Who to be everyone@

Then change the permissions to Type, Basic and Full control.

Tick the Apply permissions recursively and save.

And be sure to select Inherit! I've had no-access issues despite all permissions set correctly, once I selected Inherit, everything worked as expected.

Hello @sretalla , I have done that. It still just does not show up for me to view. Copy elsewhere. View. Anything. So......strange and depressing.

Hello @sretalla and others that have helped me out on this. I have basically given up on it. RANDOMLY, after a reboot, the folder of information showed up. I QUICKLY offloaded ALL data in that dataset and then went into FreeNAS and deleted that dataset. I assume something was just wonky with this dataset. I created it with all of the others; however, this one just clearly didn't want to work. Since the new folders have the data, everything has been working smoothly with the videos. Every boot, they show up without fail and PLEX can see them. Still not sure what went awry with that, but as you know from the past conversations, it was setup right. I did prove that with the screenshots. Most def a bug; however, not reproducible on my system to date and no one else had the issues.
Thank you!
