Flash-based solid-state drives nearly impossible to erase

After trying the usual methods of trying to wipe my USB flash key and after what another user posted after trying to wipe their flash drive to do a clean install of FreeNAS, I found this link interesting. I've tried dd, formatting, installing Ubuntu (Unsucessfully) using methods which have worked fine before.

Here's a snip of the article:
Researchers from the University of California at San Diego delivered a paper at the FAST-11 Conference in San Jose, Calif., last week that shows it's almost impossible to reliably erase data from a solid state drive.

Yea read that a while ago - only way to secure delete your data on a flash/ssd is if you applied an encryption first. Then delete the encrypted volume and throw away the key(file).
