Hi folks, I am running an ESXi system with freenas and I would like to know if there is a version without all this jail/vm stuff.
I just would like to safe some resources.

These features won't use any resources if you're not using them (aside from some disk space for the binaries and config). I would also like a "FreeNAS lite" but that doesn't exist right now. You could always install FreeBSD and manage ZFS manually which is what I've started to do.

yes that would be nice, no cosmetic updates, just security patches and pure NAS functionality.

Agreed, doesn't exist though as of right now. You can put in a feature request though.

Is there any progress on this feature request?
Or is it somehow trackable in the new ticketing system?

Hey @rosebud

As mentioned earlier in the thread, unused services in TrueNAS, whether it be the Jails and VMs, or an unused sharing protocol like NFS or AFP, don't consume any resources other than the few megabytes of disk space to store their binaries. Unless a VM or jail is running, there's no "overhead" from having the functionality available.
