No all my drives are either western digital black or Seagate 4tb drives

Got the message again. No one have any idea what this means? Im afraid this might mean one of my drives is close to failing is that correct?

OK seems to be getting worse I got a much longer error last night as I was moving data ont the FreeNAS.
So I'm going to just assume that its likely a bad disk first. So then how do I tell which physical disk it is? Maybe someway it can pull up the drive model and serial? Is there an easy way to go about that? Also is there a way to see the SMART test results of this drive (ada5) and help determine if there is in fact a problem with that drive?

Post the entire output of "smartctl -a /dev/ada5" in code brackets (use the newspaper icon to the left of the floppy disk icon when posting and select code). What you posted above means nothing to help out with this problem other than it takes 470 minutes (almost 8 hours) to run an extended test. Hopefully you have been running routine SMART testing so there will be some data to look at now.

Assuming the drive you posted was ada5, there is nothing wrong with it, no indications of a failure. I would have expected ID 199 to have some value other than zero. This leads me to thinking the controller or SATA cable is suspect. My guide should have had you replace or swap around SATA cables for the ada5 drive, this will not change ada5, just the cable it interfaces with the controller. Have you done that. Please follow the guide completely and then report back either that you found the issue or if you cannot figure it out, report what step of the guide failed. If you do everything as expected, I doubt you will post about this problem today as this could take some time to isolate.

Do SATA cables really just go bad? Ive had the system running for a year with no problems and haven't moved it or anything.. but ill still give it a shot

OK cable is replaced. Do I just make the drive run a long test and see if I get the error again? Or do I try to transfer data to it?

I too had a hard time swallowing that but yes, some cables are not as good as others and they just don't work as well. I think it could be noise rejection issues, grounding issues, loose connectors, or just cheap plated connections.

SMART tests are internal to the drive so those will not tell you if you have fixed a cable problem. If you want to try to force it I'd scrub the pool as this will result in a lot of data traffic. If you swapped the data cable between drives then look to see if the problem remains with the suspect drive (always use the serial number to identify and track it). If you just replaced the cable, maybe the problem is gone. And to be honest, it could take you a few weeks before you consider the problem fixed if you replaced a part and the problem stops because it wasn't 100% constant.

Forced a scrub. So far so good. Worth noting the cable was a bit loose/crooked when I replaced it, so hopefully that was it. Thanks for the help!
