Hi guys,

I have a couple of questions about configuring the SMART service.

How often should I configure the system to run a short test, what about a long test (once an hour, a day, a week)?

When I configure a series of short tests can I have them all run at the same time or do I want to stagger them?

What are the general guidelines or rules-of-thumb you guys like for your SMART tests?

I would love to know this too. FreeNAS7 used to send out a detailed report for the SMART tests and I can't seem to get that working in FreeNAS8, although I do get other reports (general, security).

short test once per hour will keep the drives alert
Yes you can run them at the same time since it's the drives themself that does the testing.
As regards for "rules-of-thumb" i know of noone, and smart will certenly not replace reading
logs from time to time. Not to mention keeping regular backups stored offsite.
