Greetings all! Hope everyone is staying safe !!

quick question,
noticed once a week there is a scrub performed on 'free-nas boot' which I'm assuming is my usb stick.
Then i receive this error following the scrub, this has happened consistently over the past 2 weeks following scrub.

Wondering f there is something wrong with the USB stick? or the data is corrupt?

Many thanks in advance !

You don’t backup the boot drive. That’s is one of the major points of FreeNAS. You backup the configuration and reinstall FreeNAS to a new boot device. If you don’t want to do this once a year or so, you get a more reliable device. Like an SSD or smaller 2,5 inch hdd

Thanks again, in all my years of using FREENAS this is the first time i have had trouble with the USB stick, ( this is why the n00b questions ) :)

so external SSD is the way to go ?
i have a 1tb WD external Drive that's doing nothing .....

I suppose you're right :)
for now i installed the passport, but,,, i used all the space, which is probably something i shouldn't have done .
does that mean whatever i replace it with needs to be 1tb minimum? ugghh.....

still getting errors on this drive, every month... :(

it was probably a bad Idea to use the WD passport as my boot drive, and if i remember correctly and mentioned above, do i need to match the size to 1TB if i switch to a stick or SSD for the boot drive?

Thanks in advance folks, ugghhh......

Backup your config and restore to a new boot device. While an SSD is preferred to USB, but if you're going to continue to use USB sticks for boot drives, mirror a pair of sticks. A WD Passport is overkill. Good quality 16GB sticks will do.

I'm currently on my second FreeNAS server. I started out on a HP Microserver N40L in 2011 or 2012 I believe. I've used USB drives as boot device for this server for many years without major issues (maybe replaced it once or twice). I built a new server in september of 2018 with a Supermicro X9SCM-F motherboard. With my new system I've had to replace the USB drive many times, fortunately I've used a mirrored setup so I've always managed to resilver the boot pool. Eventually I got so sick of replacing the USB drives I decided to buy a Supermicro SATA DOM. It was a bit expensive but smooth sailing so far.
