Asking for a FS SFP+ 10G system review

Hi,

so in order to future proof my work space, I've decided to go with SMF optical fibre. Since I'll be installing my server in the basement, I'll have to run cables in any case, so going with fibre seems like a no-brainer.

I was just wondering if some more knowledgeable peeps would be willing to review my choices. I don't think I've made mistakes, but you never know!

To play it safe, I've decided to buy my hardware from one manufacturer.

I went with SFP+ LR because the transceiver isn't much more expensive and it allows me to use an SMF cable as this seems to be the most future proof cabling option to go with as some people refer to it as "the last cable you'll ever run".

The NIC has FreeBSD 7.0 and Linux support. I suppose the former might indicate that it would work with FreeNas (although I'm not sure) and the latter is important to get my client system (Linux) working as well. Perhaps I could email the company to ask if they know if that NIC works with FreeNas? Or is that a dumb idea?

I'm finding the NIC's to be somewhat expensive as I need to buy two of them, but perhaps it's better not to skimp on these cards? This company also ships from the EU which is important for VAT/shipping reasons.

I have an HP ProLiant DL380e Gen8 server and still has a PCI 3 8x lane available. The client system has room as well. So no problems on that end, right?

Why single mode? that's designed for long range, as in kilometres
Why not armoured fibre?

Because single mode might support even larger bandwidth in the future? I went with it because the additional cost is negligible and people call it the last cable you'll ever run.
