Just as an FYI, these are now AIR filled drives, not helium ones.

Are these CMR disks, or SMR? That is, can these be shucked and put into a FreeNAS box, or are these only good for desktop backup?

CMR. All 8TB and above are currently CMR in the WD portfolio. 2-6TB exist in SMR flavors and you can expect Elements to come as SMR in that size.

Those 20TB are in the HM-SMR line though. Not available in the retail channel and you can’t write to them without having code that handles the HM-SMR. The cold storage companies that want them are fine with how those work :).
