I got the same thing. I assume that is normal them. On the switch port is maybe normal because it's switch , or maybe it has to do with having another link going to the same switch ( that is the management RJ45 from XG2000). If you ever happen to connect it to another switch let me know what happens.

I came across this command: "show optical-module sensor" and it returns interesting info:

xg# show optical-module sensor

I just don't know what that data means, like what is good or bad basically how to read it , do you know what it means ?

not sure....i think thats what kind of mW it is putting over the optical glass and what temp the optical is at in C

I see. I would be interesting to know if indicates something about fiber working properly. I am using 2 sets of Fiber cables. One is from CK cables and jgreco recommends and another from Shaxon ( frys and amazon sell it) One kind is twice thicker than other , and harder to bend I don't know which is better. Any tips on good fiber cables you use ?

Are they OM3? Thickness i dont think matters....long as you dont bend them beyond 90 degree's. I'll get my readings shortly, atm im working remotely

Yes spec are the same OM3 aqua color , just thickness difference.

What about support for the Intel X710-DA2 in FreeNAS? Is it already a good choice to use since it costs almost the same as the 6year old Intel X520... and although being time-proved there a probable improvements regarding features and TDP.

I have been using it for 3 months now without a single issue.

Intel 10GbE should be fully stable by now, but 10Gb/s might not be attainable (supposedly due to software limitations in the FreeBSD driver).

Now before I spend the money I would love to hear from jgreco on his opinion. He save me in the past from getting the wrong switch , and i am gonna need his help again. It comes down to 2 choices:

Will the Chelsio S310E-CR work with FreeNAS 9.3? These are dirt cheap on Ebay. I'm thinking about picking up 2 of them and doing a direct-connect between my Windows 7 PC and FreeNAS server (which are sitting right next to each other) with SFP+ twinax. Any reason this won't work? Obviously the rest of my network will still be gigabit, I'm just looking for a high-speed path for one client.

@Mlovelace is of the opinion that they should work.

What? I heard my name...

I checked and the t3_tom.ko is still in the kernel of the latest freeNAS build. So yeah, the NIC should be supported. If you don't have the need for a long networking run I would suggest getting direct attached twin axial cables. You don't have to worry about sfp+ module compatibility with those (for the most part).

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see that you ordered a twinax cable so never-mind the last part :)

"Mostly." Eh heheheh. That's what makes this business so fun!
I tend to preface almost everything with "for the most part" and "should" when it comes to Tech. I've got an Intel twinax cable plugged into my switch that is suppose to be fully supported by Extreme Networks but show up as
Code:
show port 31 information detail
Port: 31
        Virtual-router: VR-Default
        Type: SF+_UNKNOWN Unsupported Optic Module
        Random Early drop: Unsupported
Admin state: Enabled with 10G full-duplex
        Link State: Active, 10Gbps, full-duplex
        Link Ups: 22 Last: Tue Sep 29 10:52:25 2015
        Link Downs: 22 Last: Tue Sep 29 10:47:53 2015

It runs fine but is obviously not "fully supported" so I find it best to hedge my recommendations.

Yeah, the module mafia. I had some standard Finisar SFP's (1G not SFP+) plugged into one of the 10G switches here. Did a major version firmware upgrade and suddenly it refused to recognize them. How damn rude.
