Just updated to FreeNAS 11.3-U3.1. The dashboard is blank. I also get "Web UI HTTPS certificate setup failed" error message. Both issues existed with 11.3.U3.

Hi,

Might be two separate issues... if you have any encrypted pools.

I have a encrypted disk on one of my FreeNAS-11.3-U3.1 (with hotfix 21 May for SMB-startup-bug) on 3 servers. The one with an encrypted disk does NOT show any data on the Dashboard until I have unlocked the encrypted volume.

Thanks for your replies.
1. I don't have encrypted pools
2. I cleared cache, it didn't help
3. the default config, shows the dashboard, uploading my config breaks it
4. no vlans

So https is missing. I don't if this has to do with the certificate issue or not?
https works on my u3.1 install with an exception set in firefox.

Make sure you have a certificate installed under System->Certificates. Also, under System->General, check if the WebGUI HTTP->HTTPS Redirect box is checked, and the certificate is selected as the GUI SSL Certificate.

Attached is an image of default certificate. When I try to WebGUI HTTP->HTTPS Redirect box, I get "selected certificate does not have a private key". Please see the attached image.

Well, that's why HTTPS doesn't work, and you're seeing the glitches you do. You may need to fix this via ACME to get a real certificate.

what changed from U2.1 to U3.1 to cause this issue. I been using Freenas since version 8. I never created a certificate. My server sits on a switch with no internet access. I don't know what ACME is.

Who knows? The upgrade process always does a lot of database stuff behind the scenes. To get things working again, you'll unfortunately have to do a lot of manual certificate processing, as your server doesn't have Internet access, which is what Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME) (see Guide section 7.16.1) requires.
  1. Create a new self-signed CA. You'll need to create an internal CA. Make the duration something very long, like 100 years.
  2. Create a new internal certificate, using the CA you just created.
  3. Use this new cert for the SSL GUI cert.
  4. Delete the mangled freenas-default cert.

No reason at all this should be necessary; FreeNAS is perfectly capable of generating its own self-signed certs.
I never created a certificate.
There's no way you could have been using it on HTTPS if you hadn't.

Actually, that's not entirely true. The Guide says FreeNAS will generate a cert on boot if one doesn't already exist, so this may have happened during an earlier upgrade, unbeknownst to @gearhead.

Interesting; I don't recall ever seeing that behavior before. I wonder if it's a relatively recent thing, or if I'd just missed it. But in that case, very strange indeed that the private key would have gone missing.

Thank you for your feedback. It surprises me that nobody else has complained! I think as a side effect, I can't access Freenas thru SSH. I have to read up on how to create a certificate.

I'm having this same issue.

I normally connect over SSL with the self-signed cert created by the FreeNAS install.
  • This was an upgrade from 11.3-U1 to 11.3-U3.1
  • I have tried clearing cookies and cache on my browser and relaunching it.
  • I have tried other browsers.
  • I have tried a second reboot of the FreeNAS system.
  • All my network interfaces appear to still be recognized (saw someone on the 11.3 U1 thread found this caused their issue somehow).
  • Since I still have plain http connectivity enabled I tried in a Private Prowsing windows (no shared cookies/cache) and tried connecting that way. in case the old cert was causing this. No dice. No dashboard no matter what but other sections of the interface work fine.

Here too. Couldn't solve it.
EDIT: Yes, it was an unplugged external USB drive.
