FreeNAS Fans,

I’m pleased to officially announce the availability of FreeNAS 11.3-BETA1. This release comes nearly a year after debuting 11.2, but we believe it’s more than worth the wait. The iX team has been hard at work, not only to add new features, but also ensure that 11.3 is rock-solid reliable and the easiest to use FreeNAS ever. This release of 11.3-BETA1 marks the first opportunity you have to start testing out some of the new functionality, while we march towards a 11.3-RELEASE in the coming months. Of course, as with any pre-release, please ensure you’re using it on non mission-critical systems and data and follow best-practices for backups.

Here’s a quick look at some of the high-level highlights from this release, keeping in mind that the software has seen improvements across the board.
  • Replication re-write, allows much faster replication streams, as well as resume support for failed replication tasks
  • New cloud-sync features, including OAuth, exclude lists, and bandwidth limits.
  • A UI-Driven ACL Manager
  • Plugins enhanced to support NAT on the NAS network interface, meaning no more having to assign IPs or use DHCP for each one
  • A new iSCSI wizard for fast share creation
  • Overhauled Dashboard and Reporting UI pages, far more responsive and detailed than before
  • Improvements to pool-creation, especially with large numbers of disks
  • And much more!

11.3-BETA links are now active on our FreeNAS download page. Users running 11.2-U6 can update to 11.3-BETA one by using the command “# freenas-update -T FreeNAS-11.3-BETA update” from the CLI. When 11.2-U7 releases in the next few weeks the UI option for changing trains to 11.3-BETA1 will also become available.

Please send us feedback here or via our Ticketing System.

Thanks and happy testing!

When trying to 'Display system processes', I get `resizewin: timeout reading from terminal`. Otherwise, looks good.

System/General is not showing any values and the save button is not active. Only titles and pulldown menus are shown.
Is it just my system?

I am just curious if FreeNAS devs can keep up with FreeBSD support life, just checked BSD site and there is written that 11.2 is EOL from 31.10.2019.
11.3 beta is out but just for testers, this is kinda interesting approach to let users in production stay out of date for 2-3 months...

FreeNAS 11.2 is not based upon FreeBSD 11.2-release. we track 11-stable and backport / apply security fixes as needed. We don't rely on FreeBSD to handle updates, security or otherwise to our system.

Little known fact, we also have backported fixes from FreeBSD 12 and 13 into 11.2/3, so don't get too hung up on the version number these days :)

Ah sorry then, so you work with 11-stable branch and apply patches yourself, so EOL of 11-stable for FreeNAS will be somewhere in 2021 ?

We determine when the EOL of any particular FreeNAS version is. If we wanted to, we could maintain a version based on 11-stable long beyond FreeBSD's stated EOL timelines. Some companies ran FreeBSD 4.x for a decade or more :)

Granted we most likely won't do that, since 11.3 and then 12.0 are just around the corner, but rest assured we will maintain whatever the latest version(s) of FreeNAS are for as long as it makes sense for us and our users to do so.

FreeNAS 11.2 is not based upon FreeBSD 11.2-release.
...but any jails are, and that release is now EOL. And that's breaking things.

Edit: it's breaking things again--this has been a problem at least with 11.0 and 11.1, so it's nothing new and shouldn't have been unexpected.

Really need to have jails based on supported FreeBSD versions. I think that either the release schedule should be adjusted to stay ahead of FreeBSD EOL or since FreeNAS is based on the FreeBSD stable branch then make sure the kernel and userland are new enough to support newer jails and let iocage install newer jails regardless of what the FreeNAS version is.

What are the planned timescales for FreeNAS 12 which I assume will be built on FreeBSD 12.x? I'm also assuming it's not another 12 months, otherwise, FreeBSD jails will likely become unable to update.

New behavior: lagg0 MAC address changes on each boot, which means I now need to go static IPv4 instead of DHCP-reserved-lease.

Is this an expected change in behavior, or considered a defect?

Missing in release notes: What are the new ZFS feature flags, what do they enable?

Jail behavior - devfs ruleset 5 is gone, used in plugins such as plex. Only rule set I can now find is 100. Nothing in release notes about this: Changed behavior or a defect?

But as I know, jails cannot have higher version than FreeNAS base system, but you got the point
