Hi,

So I’ve finally gotten fiber 500/500 at home and want to register a domain and get a wildcard ssl certificate to use on freenas, unifi guest portal, nextcloud+++ for lan use only. The only service I plan on passing thru my gateway is VPN.

The problem is that I have dynamic IP, fixed is simply not offered by my ISP.

Is dyndns pro the way to go or is the service from namecheap a better alternative?

Any insights are greatly appreciated!

You are going to need a public ip, no issue if it’s dynamic, just set up dynamic DNS through something like Cloudflare.

If it's anything like their DNS service steer clear.

I'd follow @garm advice and use Cloudflare.

Third the advice for Cloudflare. Bonus is that their API is well-supported by ACME clients (especially acme.sh), so getting that wildcard cert would be straightforward (although I prefer individual certs for the individual hosts that need them--again, using DNS validation, this is pretty straightforward, as none of them need to be accessible from the Internet).

As far as a domain registrar, I like EasyDNS. Cloudflare does this as well, and they're cheap, but AFAICT they'll only take transfers, they don't do any initial registrations. I'm sure that will change in due course, but that was the case last I saw.
